tempo

tempo pro squat rack developed at level design - 2021

about tempo

Tempo has rapidly grown to be one of the most popular in-home fitness solutions, allowing workout enthusiasts to lift free weights at home with built in computer vision to track form, weight, and progress. As the Tempo brand increased in popularity there was a need for more advanced workout equipment. Level designed solutions to enhance the Tempo repertoire. A new squat rack, bench, and heavier weights + storage were added to the system.

creative strategy

Tempo products fit seamlessly into home spaces, emulating form and finish found in furniture and home goods. Level was challenged to design a squat rack, bench, and weight storage system that could belong in a living room. Existing products are often unwieldly and large so the goal was to offer a solution that could be easily folded away and stowed.

process

I participated in initial ideation around the tempo pro product suite and took the final concept family into CAD. I then further evolved the tempo pro squat rack CAD for production. As the rack was developed, I worked closely with engineers to ensure the safety and stability of the setup. I reviewed production samples and made issues decks for the vendors manufacturing the product. I offered feedback to the internal Tempo teams on marketing renders and the final fit and finish of the rack.

features

The Tempo Pro family uses a custom extrusion across the bench and squat rack design to drive down tooling costs. A sliding button allows for easy height adjustment and the j-hooks are custom designed to help with safely racking the bar. The rack collapses to a small footprint, about the size of a pair of skis.
