surge

an electrical stimulator for muscle performance and recovery - 2018

electrical muscle stimulation

Surge is a combination EMS (electrical muscle stimulator) and TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) unit. Surge works by producing an electrical impulse and sending it between electrodes on your body.

Contracts muscles

Surge can be used to contract muscles, aiding in recovery, strengthening, relaxation, warm up, blood circulation, and rehabilitation.

Stimulates nerves

Surge can stimulate nerves and stop pain signals from reaching the brain, aiding in chronic and acute pain.

creative strategy

Smart

Use an app to choose from multiple pre-programed sessions

Intuitive

Avoid confusion in cable attachment and management

Positive

Tension lines represent electric currents as friendly and familiar

Portable

Rechargeable case and compact electrodes so you can surge on the go

Wireless

Eliminate wires and the fear of shock that goes with them

electrodes

The electrodes are compact and wireless, allowing them to go anywhere. The electrodes feature numbered labeling to coincide with where to place each disk based on the app, a power on/off button for safe emergency shut off, and snap contacts for electrode pad attachment and charging. The surfacing details invoke muscle tissues and electric currents.

case

Contacts in case interface with snap contacts on electrodes for charging. Additionally, there is space in the case for storing extra electrode pads. LED lights on case indicate charge on each charging electrode. A usb c connection on the exterior of the case allows for charging with any standard usb port and cord. Additionally, a twist to unlock feature allows to case to be more robust and portable.

packaging

The surge packaging was designed to emphasize Surge’s brand values. The matchbox like green insert sides out in the same way the charging case does, the green core represents power. The unboxing experience was designed to be simple, the product is revealed first and a secondary box containing the charging cable and extra pads is hidden underneath the product.

UI / UX

As many combination EMS and TENS units are controlled with a central hub, this system shifts that functionality into an app. The app allows users a simple experience in choosing which Surge session they would like to complete in addition to customizable sessions. The app allows for functionality like interfacing with other fitness apps and trackers, creating a profile, monitoring sessions statistics, and automatically ordering new pads as each set wears out.
